The State of The Dead, Heaven or Hell?
Greetings Friend!
We'd like you to study this topic with a open mind and heart. In other words, it is recommended that any preconceived knowledge and studies are put aside. We are not looking forward to indoctrinate anyone into believing in any partial traditional doctrines and/or personal views. Rather, we'd like you to study and look at the word of God for what it is and as it was meant to be understood.
The Word of God - tells us – we must study it by cross referencing every word and verse: “Here a little, there a little”.
Isaiah 28:10-16 King James Version
For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: 11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. 12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. 13 But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. 14 Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. 15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves: 16 Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
Here we read certain false prophets were patronizing their own understanding as opposed to heeding the word of the Lord! This is why - we must study it by comparing word upon word, verse against verse and looking at the original language instead of the translated one! In addition, we must look at past history in order to co-relate prophecy. So when it comes to the “State of the Dead” – The Lord has given us clear instructions and details how and what every human being is comprised of. Let us have an in-depth study by first recounting Genesis, specifically the creation story.
How are we put together?
Genesis 2:7 King James Version
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Let us analyze the two used/added elements to form a living soul (a person):
a) Dust of the ground:
Hebrew: "of the dust" H6083 `aphar (dry earth, dust, poweder, ashes, earth, mortar) and "the ground" H127 'adamah (ground, land)
Dictionary: "dust" (small particles of ground) and "ground" (earth surface)
b) Breath of life:
Hebrew: "the breath" H5397 neshamah (breath (God, man), spirit) and "of life" H2416 chay (living, alive)
Dictionary: "breath" (filled with air) and "life" (working being)
Outcome: Became a Living Soul:
Hebrew: "became a living" H2416 chay (living, alive) and "soul" H5315 nephesh (self, life, creature, person, mind, living being)
Dictionary: "living" (having life) and "soul" (living being)
Based on each element used by our creator and both definitons in the original and modern language - we can deduce that in themselves they are what they are (dust, ground, breath of life). However, when coupled, mixed, or put together: a living soul, a human being, a person is formed!
Now that we a biblical understanding of what we are and how we are formed - let us look into what happens when a person dies! We also can say what happens when the living soul dies! This is referenced granted there are so many different doctrines about death.
In so many cultures the word soul is used as if it is a special third being coming out of the person or living soul. In other words, local myths and fables speak of the soul as a separate entity. In reality, based on we just presented there are only two parts to a living soul: “Dust” and “The Breath of Life”, which comes from Alighty GOD!
Perhaps, it might sound harsh. However, the bible very clearly points out -
Our Heavenly Father, the Almighty GOD gave His breath of life or spirit. He is the one who introduces His life in the dust. Therefore, we become animated. Death is not easy event in any relative life – it is one of the most devastating realities we must face as a human being and living soul. Hurt, pain, so many questions pop in our heads and we only wonder.
Why is my relative, friend, etc. lifeless, not moving? Where did his/her life go to?
Sadly, such a painful event is taken advantage of and many simply say:
”Your relative is now in paradise looking down on us” or
“He is with God watching and protecting you? or worse
"Your relative is in hell"
Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 King James Version
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. 6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.
Let us analyze what the bible says about Death:
First, let us understand one biblical fact - the dead go either to:
sheol, underworld, grave, hell, pit, grave, hades, tomb, etc. (Hebrew strong word H7585). There are other synonym variations such as sepulchre, burial, and buryingplace (Hebrew strong word H6900)
For example, let us look at the following bible verses.
Genesis 44:29 King James VersionAnd if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the
grave.
Numbers 16:33 King James VersionThey, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the
pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.
2 Samuel 22:6 King James VersionThe sorrows of
hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me..
Job 17:13 King James VersionIf I wait, the
grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness.
Job 17:16 King James VersionThey shall go down to the bars of the
pit, when our rest together is in the dust.
Psalm 6:5 King James VersionFor in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the
grave who shall give thee thanks?
Psalm 9:17 King James VersionThe wicked shall be turned into
hell, and all the nations that forget God.
Psalm 49:14 King James VersionLike sheep they are laid in the
grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the
grave from their dwelling.
Psalm 55:15 King James VersionLet death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into
hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.
Isaiah 14:20 King James VersionThou shalt not be joined with them in
burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.
Hebrew strong word H7585 is known as a PolySemy.
For example, the word
brave means
heroic, showy, gaudy, etc. This does not mean I can now elaborate a different meaning from the root based on my own personal understanding. What do I mean by this? Let us look at the verse containg the word “hell”. Does it really mean the dead are burning in deep place underneath the grave?
Not at all, Matthew 10:28 uses the word hell as well. However, the connotation is inferred in English as a burning place. The same it's true for word "soul" – it seems like the bible is referring to a different word in relation to the previous old testament verses we looked at (mind local folklore, fables, false doctrines, and beliefs).
Let us break down
Matthew 10:28 in the New Testament, written originally in Greek then translated to localized languages for a better-related connotation and understanding. We will look at the root and translation.

"Gehenna" or "Gehenna of fire", originally the valley of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem. On this valley where any dirt, rubbish, and dead animals were thrown out and/or cast out to be burned. A 'symbol' for the wicked and their final destruction. |
In this verse we have all the needed words to compare with the old testament. However, we have a language issue with the word
“the soul” and “soul” - it should have been really translated as
“the breath of life” or
“breath”. Nonetheless, it would have not fit well or made sense to an English speaking person. However, if we go to the biblical meaning it matches the old testament Hebrew meaning. Therefore, we cannot infer the soul is a third entity. The same is true with the word
"hell" - it is not, this
"Gehenna of fire", a place burning right now; this is simply figurative language. Most of the time, misused, taught wrongly because of personal misinterpretations according to what the writer really meant or rather simply meant to relay.
So,
“soul” is really
"breath of life" and
"hell" is still the same
sheol, underworld, grave, pit, grave, hades, tomb, etc.
Now, we must understand there will be a lake of fire, which Almighty GOD will open up during the final judgment towards the end of all things! Note: Sodom and Gomorrha are not burning right now, but were eternally desolated by brimstone and fire! So it will be with the wicked on judgment day - this is referring to the day when the lake of fire will be set up for the cleansing of all things!
The lake of fire was not prepared for us, but for Satan and his fallen angels. Sadly, because of sin and wickedness some will end up there!
Jude 6-7 King James VersionAnd the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. 7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
Revelation 19:20 King James VersionAnd the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
Revelation 20:10 King James VersionAnd the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Revelation 20:14 King James VersionAnd death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Revelation 20:15 King James VersionAnd whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
So, what's the state of the dead? Where do they go?
Let us understand the bible is very clear as to explaining what the dead know:
"For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing.." Nonetheless, most always wonder - where do they go. The answer is also very clear according to:
Ecclesiastes 12:7-8 King James Version
Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. 8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.
It is very clear that death is nothing more than creation is retrospect. In other words it is the regressive process accomplished during creation. Almighty GOD, YAH created man from the “dust of the ground” and His “breath of life” (Spirit). During death this process is simply reverted; dust goes back into the dust and God's breath of life goes back to Him, whom gave it.
Ecclesiastes 3:20-21 King James Version
All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again. 21 Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?
The Holy Scripture, as spoken to the prophets - once again states a recount of creation in regressive mode: dust back to dust and breath of life back to Almighty GOD. I understand many would argue the fact in the new testament where Paul points out, he'd rather be present with the Lord than to be here on earth. Sure, who would not want to be in heaven and not on this pain, death, sin stricken planet? However, all must wait until the HE calls “It is Done” and He gives the commandment to His Son, Christ Jesus to return to the earth for final redemption!
2 Corinthians 5:1 King James Version
For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
2 Corinthians 5:8-10 King James Version
We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
So, my family members are not watching, protecting, and caring for me from heaven? Absolutely, not. Once a person dies, he or she does not have any interaction with the living. They cannot perceive reality nor they are having fun in heaven going about heaven's business just yet.
So, what is the spirit doing in heaven? When will they come back to live again?
1 Thessalonians 4:15-18 King James Version
For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
This is the day where all dead and living in Christ will be finally glorified to be with the Lord forever! Or is King David in heaven or still waiting for the resurrection?
Acts 2:33-35 King James Version
Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. 34 David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
In conclusion, the spirit is simply asleep until Almighty GOD command is given to His son. Mind, this is not the soul. At this point there is not soul for the body has gone back to the dust. So, the fact the bible translation is sadly misconstrue to adapt to the different languages connotation. We must always keep in mind our soul (you the person) are only active and animated, while we are alive on earth - still possessing God's breath of life. Which of course, after death it goes back to the owner, YAH Himself!
For the time being, we must live with Almighty GOD's great promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord! Whether we live or die we are the Lord's.
May The Lord give you peace and love until we are with Him Forever!
